Swedish Cope with Saddle Notch Corners

In the area of the Black Hills, the normally used log is the round log.  This Swedish coped log with notched corners is typically called a Rocky Mountain Style.  That is used all over the nation, but mostly in the Northwest. This is probably the most expensive log as well.
Timberline offers a Swedish Coped style wall log with saddle notch corners in 8” to 22” diameter round logs. Each log is machine lathe turned to a uniform diameter and notched for precision. These logs intersect each other one half a course off and the saddle notch will fit over the log it meets at the corner. This style of log wall only requires caulking between courses; however, chinking can be done to achieve a specific aesthetic appearance.

6 x 10 Dovetail

The next style is the Dovetail Log - this is typically a Southern and Eastern style log.  They are 6" thick and 10" wide.
The Dovetail style wall log offers an alternative to the round log appearance without losing the natural feeling most log home owners are searching for. Unlike the Swedish Coped log style, the dovetail system is built with flat surfaces on both the inside and out and displays chinking between each course. The corners interlock one half a course off with beveled cuts on top and bottom to produce the dovetail joint that gets its name from the shape of a dove’s tail.
A home built with this style is very tight.  Actually, the harder the wind blows, the tighter the home gets.  The only way something could happen to this if the logs were lifted straight up.  Its thermal value is excellent and typically is about 10% less expensive than the round log.

10x10 Butt and Pass

The 10x10 Butt and Pass style wall log offers a brawny appearance with a flat surface on the interior and exterior of the home. Each log is cut with waney corners and chinking is done between each course. Each wall log is set on the same level as the next wall log and at the corners one log extends beyond the corner while the adjoining log butts into it. On the next course, the opposite log extends beyond the corner and the first abuts into it.
This log is yet less expensive than each of the 2 above styles.  This has been a very popular style since we brought it to this area.
It is a log of less maintenance as well, as both sides are flat - it does not collect dust on the inside, and does not collect water on the outside.
